"...baby don't hurt me..."
great, now that song is in my head!
You know someone is really in love with you if they put your needs before their own. Your happiness is their happiness.
(You can argue with someone and still be in love with them. But, you will probably apologize right away and try to see their side. No, it's not being mean. And being a great companion is different...and yes, being understanding is important, but it goes beyond that. )
Edit for your edit: That sounds like codependence. I doubt that person learned how to love effectively. They fight with you in order to make up. It's unhealthy. They must thrive on the ups and downs. It doesn't mean they don't love you, but it's not a healthy love. They need to realize that and stop the fighting and just love you without the drama. It is a sign of low self-esteem and a need for reassurance. Maybe give daily reassurances and the person will feel more secure?
Good luck.

Love is always patient and kind. It is never jealous. Love is never boastful or conceited. It is never rude or selfish. It does not take offense and is not resentful. Love takes no pleasure in other people’s sins, but delights in the truth. It is always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope, and to endure whatever comes.
You're experiencing the rush from "Dopamine". Dopamine is a chemical reaction within the brain, aka "Love Sick". This is a short-term fixation that can be addictive. Those who get addicted to the rush often have to find ways of increasing the feeling through more intense acts like adding anger, sadness, co-dependence, and competition to it to maintain the same level of thrills the dopamine creates. It is very similar to what an alcoholic undergoes.

The Bible says it best:
1 Corinthians 13:4-8 - Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

Love is something undescribable. SOmething impossibly deep and never ending. A chemical imbalance creating hormonal "love" between multiple people.

love comes in different shapes and sizes
it can mean completely different things to different people
but you know your own love because it feels comfortable and right and seems to all fit together like a puzzle
just like that....

It appears you are talking about the life sharing kind of love. That kind of love begins with acceptance and friendship. After that, it just naturally develops.

Love is what's left when sex is not the only thing you can't wait to have with her.
