Ok.. First I would get your battery load tested.. If it is over 5 years old I would definetly suspect that.. also check the terminals for corrosion. Not just visually.. Disconnect them and clean them with baking soda and water or some anti-corrode spray. Your alternator brushes could also be getting worn and not charging your battery quite as much as it needs. Some signs your starter is no good would be a grinding or just an electric motor noise when you turn the key. Don't continue to drive it like this. You can damage the ring gear with a bad starter. (The gear that the starter gear engages) To change the ring gear on the flywheel you will need to pay as much labour as taking the transmission off.

When a starter goes bad then sometimes it will crank and sometimes it wont. You'll know when the starter is bad. It could be that your batteries cranking amps are down below normal. You could be reading good voltage from the battery but it could still be bad. Best bet is to have the battery tested at Autozone or Checker.

one way to know if it's bad is that it won't turn over the engine. It may not be the starter but a low cranking battery a bad wire or connection.

most starters do not go out like you mentioned most of the time the solenoid goes the car just clicks when you try to start it, another problem is when the starter seems not to disengage, sounds like you have a week battery and if that is not the problem them it is defiantly your starter bearings

Hard time cranking is one of the first symptoms. one day, it will just quit. Take care of it now by having the car checked out, before you get stranded somewhere on the road.

sounds like a low battery to me, take the car to autozone and have them give you a free charging system test.
