My two month old daughter has started imitating my sounds during play...it's so cute and fun, and I had no idea they did this so early! We touch noses and I make a high pitched "ahhh" noise to her, and she does it back to me, like we are talking. She is also starting to respond when I talk to her by cooing back at me....is sound imitation normal for a two month old? I'm a new mom so everything she does is different and exciting for me!

Sounds like she is a bit ahead of the curve with talking; normally it's around 4 months before they imitate and coo back. Here's a site to see 'what to expect when'

I love babycenter!

Please keep in mind that babies and toddlers work on one major skill at a time - like language, gross motor skills or fine motor skills. So, little girl MAY be an early talker and MAY end up being a late walker (which evens out in the middle). And when she starts working on crawling or cruising her cooing and talking probably will take a few steps back. THIS IS ALL NORMAL.

Congratulations and Enjoy!

Isn't it just sweet?! I'd have to agree with the first answer that she might be a little ahead. My twins just started mimicking sounds about 2 or 3 wks ago and they are 4 months old. I think 4 or 5 months is normal. Someone told me that a baby as young as a wk old will mimick you sticking your tongue out if you get close enough to their face so they can see. I tried it with all of mine, and it worked! Babies are a lot smarter than some people give them credit for! Just wait, it gets more and more exciting the older they get. Cherish every moment!

my son was imitating sounds at two months...I would say the vowels, and he would imitate them. My two month old daughter was born three weeks early and isn't doing it yet, but she wants to ...she forms her lips like mine, but isn't doing it yet. every baby is different. Just keep it up. the more you talk to your baby and interact with her, the smarter she'll be. the best advice I have for you is to start getting into a ritual by reading to her every night. It's a known fact that children that are read to at a young age will develop a lifelong love of reading.

she is young that's great. But she may regress when she learns a new skill so don't get worried if she suddenly stops.

She sounds like a ball of fun, enjoy her
