7 string is good if you have the money for it (and they are common, unlike someone else said).
Otherwise, throw some 12 or 13 gauge strings on to your guitar.
Down tune your E string to D. You only will need to play the bottom 3 strings for those crunchy chords.
If D isnt low enough, drop your bottom 3 strings (EAD now DAD) down to C# Ab C# or CGC.
Basically, you can tune down until you guitar starts to sound like crap. The heavier the strings, the lower you can go.
If you want to just make the music recognizable, you can keep whatever strings you have on and then drop to D. Thats probably the simplest way.
And a side not to chealea:
I own a 7 string bass. You can have 8,9,10,3 or even 21 string basses.
7 string guitars can be used for a lot more than corn. Pretty much any hard rock or metal can utilize the 7th string.
However, that's in your bass players range, and your cutting down on his room. You might upset him : )

It depends. What 6 string guitar do you have? If the bridge has enough clearance to get bigger gauge strings, sure! I have a friend who's using standard B tuning on a 6er.
B - E - A - D - G - B
Needless to say, he's a rhythm guitarist who's into riffs, rather than solos.
P.S. Chelsea shouldn't comment on things that she knows nothing about. The 7 has been around for many many years, and it's very wide spread now.

Two things you could do: (1) You could go to a "drop D" tuning, where you just tune your sixth E string down to D, or (2) You could tune the whole guitar down a whole step. Drop D tuning is pretty effective. You have to get used to it, but it's not too difficult since you don't use your sixth E string for guitar solos most of the time anyway. Just remember that you have to bar all the way across the first three strings to do power chords until you get back up to A.
P.S.: Chelsea is misinformed -- 7-string guitars are being built for commercial sale (not custom-built) by some of the big names in guitar. Check out the website below to see some:

Dude, there are 2 string amounts for a guitar, unless it's a bass. Those amounts are 6 & 12. That's it. If someone has a 7 string guitar, it's very rare and no doubt custom built. A bass guitar has only 4, 5, or 6 strings. So, you don't need a 7 string guitar. LMAO. Even if you had a 7 string guitar, LMAO, custom built, you'd only use it for Korn songs. Seven string guitar, that made my day. I havn't laughed that hard in like 800 years! Thank you!!!
