I recently bought a laptop from Radio Shack that they were selling out of and It was stolen from my vehicle this weekend in Pittsburgh. I am not real computer literate so I have no idea if it has a tracking program on it. I did not have the internet up and running on it yet if that makes a difference. Trying to get answers from toshiba or radio shack has not been with good results. What do you think::: does it have a tracking device installed, and if so how do I activate it and find it.? I know i did not install any programs at all or even put any information on the computer at all yet so it probably has a clean hard drive.

Why would a computer you bought from radio shack have a Global Positioning Satellite tracking system? What are you, James Bond? I'm only joking, of course, but it really won't, and you're much better off going to the police station. You just don't get computers with tracking systems, because they would cost as much as the computer itself. Maybe for your car, but that wasn't stolen. In the future, you could make recovery of stolen valuables easier for the police by having them marked with a UV Pen or Smart Water.

Hope that helps,

That is horrible, but I might have a solution.

I have 1 solution: Did you buy a replacement plan, warranty, etc etc... From RadioShack? If so try and bug them about it and ask them if it can be replaced, probably not. Because it would be very easy for someone to just say it was stolen and go and get another.

Well okay a 2nd solution: If Windows was installed and you have the keys and everything like that, I believe it is possible for them to track down your PC, not sure but it may be possible.

That is about it, here are some good places to buy a laptop if it cannot be replaced:

www.Tigerdirect.com

www.newegg.com

www.cyberpowerpc.com

www.ibuypower.com

Unlikely, though if you can post the model number and a list of options you purchased with it that would help.

Aside from this, another slim possibility would be to track the laptop by the MAC (Media Access Controller... network card in other words) address on its network adapter. If someone plugs the laptop into a network, it's possible to read the MAC or hardware address off the card. If you know this address (it might be contained in the product packaging for the laptop), you could give that to the police and see if they might know of anyplace that could track a laptop by its MAC address.

I don't know whether this is possible, who knows whoever stole it might've pawned it so that it's now gathering dust in a pawn shop, or dismantled it for parts. But it's a long shot.

Computers almost never have tracking devices installed in them. And if it did, you would have to pay extra for that. It's not a natural part of any computer.
