Is it alright to email an employer about a possible summer job?

Email is such a popular form of communication these days. If I were you though I would send what you need to by email and follow this up by a hard copy. This will show any prospective employer that you are keen and also that you are able to use a computer and the post office!

Yes but it won't be as effective as a call. It's too easy to filter out your E-mail as spam. A potential employer will learn much more of you with a call or visit than an impersonal E-mail. I've gotten interviews and subsequent jobs with cold calls so I recommend them to everyone. Good Luck.

I see nothing wrong with that. If they have advertised for help wanted and requested a specific way of contacting them then you should follow that. Some employers prefer phone calls and some prefer in-store contact while others are ok with any means of contact.
