I like BMW better if I need to haul people, especially the 3 series with the 335i. Also the M3 is awesome and the M5. But for a convertible I definitely prefer the Mercedes SLK lineup over BMW convertibles. I've heard Mercedes-Benz has lost some reliability lately though.

BMW for sure! If you buy a Mercedes you will regret it, because it will be in the mechanic's garage more than you'll ever imagine! Mercedes' reliability has gone down so much after its merger with Chrysler. The older Mercedes are nice. But the newer ones are horrible. Also all BMW X,3,5,6,7, M-powered BMWs are faster and more affordable than C,Cl,E,S,G,ML,SL,AMG Mercedes. They both have their share of electrical problems, but BMWs have a good resell value and they are more reliable. Also, BMWs are more affordable in terms of actual cost, insurance cost, and long term costs. Plus they offer an amazing warranty where they include everything, even free oil changes!! Make the right choice, choose BMW and you will never drive another car again!!

For me the answer hands down is the BMW, Once you drive a BMW you won't want to even think about the Mercedes. I lived in Germany for many years and I still have family that live there, the general consensus is that nothing drives like a BMW but remember that either is far above anything you can buy from the Big 3 in the United States

If you're looking at the C-class merc opposed to the 3 series, you cant go wrong with the merc.
If its the 5 series and E class, BMW for sure!
I've owned some 5 BMW's and one Merc (c220 turbo-diesel) back in South Africa. Over there BMW's loose value much faster than anything else, and Mercedes keeps its value better than any other car. Always baffled me.

I tend to prefer BMWs. Theyre more driver oriented cars.
