I've been searching Google for the technical jargon in attempt to not sound dumb/confusing, but I've given up. When I moved into this house, the sink in my bathroom was broken. The little handle thing that you pull upwards to plug the sink and push down to unplug it isn't there, so the plug itself is always down (and the sink is always plugged.) How do you fix this (without hiring a plumber)??

You need to go to Home Depot . go to the plumbing dept. and find someone to help you locate the "Plunger arm" for a sink if you can't find it yourself in the "Sink repair" aisle. This is a very easy fix without having to hire a plumber.
Just simply open the package once you have it..drop the new arm down the little hole in the back of the faucet. Then your going to have to get under the sink and attach the arm to the ball valve on the sink trap. Trust me..it's much easier to do than it sound's. You will have a little diagram on the back of the plunger arm package. You can do it!!
Cost...under $7.00
Polish dog from the vendor on the way out $3.50 w/drink YUMMY!

Ok. U gotta get under the sink so open the door/s. At the base of the sink, go down a lil ways. There should b a silver thing behind the pipe w/ holes in it. That goes to the Faucet Plug. It's supposed to go Up to open the plug. Gently push up on it. If it doesnt move, pull down slightly & repeat. A lil work & it should release itself. If U can get the plug up a lil bit, use a Regular Phillips (flathead screwdriver) & pry gently up the plug. Then U should b able to get it out & put something down the drain to clear the bar that goes to the hook on the bottom of the plug & that should fix the problem.

It sounds like you're referring to he pop-up assembly. I included a link with an enlarged view for you to look at. These are carried at Home Depot, Lowes, Ace Hardware etc., and are very common. On the backside of the drain loosen and remove the round nut which holds the lower rod assembly. Once it is completely loose you can pull it straight out the back. You can use the other end and stick back in and push up which will allow you to remove the stopper. Take the new rod and insert into the hole. Lower the stopper in and try to line the stopper base hole with the rod. This is what actually lifts and lowers the stopper. Once they are connected tighten the nut. Drop the upper pull rod into the hole on the faucet. Connect the strap (the flat piece with holes) to the upper pull rod. tighten this nut to join the two. To connect the lower rod and strap you will have to remove one side of the spring tension clip from the lower rod. Slide the strap over the lower rod and re-attach the loose end of the tension spring clip. Usually you will have to connect at the second hole up from the bottom. Check to see if it operates properly. Adjust as necessary.

It sounds like your just missing the pull. You can go to Home Depot and get a replacement for it. It just attaches to the stopper. Of course if you don't use the drain plug just take out the stopper and buy a rubber plug.

Is it under the sink? I'm not technical either, but sometimes if you tighten the nuts under the sink it will work. At least, it did for mine.
