People act differently under stress, especially when its something out of there control. Just be there for him and comfort him.

There are three things that help us deal with life's worst events:
Predictability- which he has, but not the timing, which can make it worse in a way...
Avoidance- and there's no going back now, I imagine...
Control- This is where he can have some relief.

He can't control his mother's death. He can't control how or when or why...
But he can find his own way to meaningfully contribute to the situation.!!!!
Suggestion: Ask him what he can do to make this time easier on her, himself, and therefore, the whole family.

It's very hard to accept such a thing.
Men may or may not be socialized to be emotionally purposeful. Your man may be able to handle concrete things like making sure someone mows the lawn... hiring a nurse, etc.
But men tend not to be as good at being the nurse who goes and makes sure she takes her medicine, and eating meals with her and keeping her company.
Women are the caretakers. Women deal with things in this way... and if there's another woman around to do these things, then she at least feels some relief that someone is there... usually, of course.
Women express their fears, griefs, etc., whereas men may not feel comfortable doing so... even if they have learned to do it!

So if he can do somethign logical and concrete, but removed emotionally, taht might be a good place to start. Eventually, he may be able to be close in the way that most women tend to be...
Good luck through this hard time.

it depends every person is an individual and acts in a different way to new difficult situations
your husband is obviously under alot of stress and therefore you are seeing the effects
maybe talk to him, comfort him
ask him what he is feeling
if the worse comes to the worst try and convince him to go to a counsellor even if it is just the once
good luck ;)
