personally i`m excited, because i`ve been a fan since 1999 but even when i lived in london i sadly didn`t have the opportunity to see one of his matches in person...after i discovered david beckham, i became more interested in football (as an american we are not football-mad like in other countries) and took an interest in learning the rules of the sport, etc....now i think he will bring more exposure to the game here & perhaps increase its popularity...

I think that while some people will watch because of him, the vast majority of the sports world will continue not watching MLS. It doesn't really matter what he does on the field, he will be a bigger icon off the field. Sorry to ruin your hopes on MLS, but I just don't see soccer happeing in the states.

David Beckham will help soccer in the USA, because he's bringing attention to MLS. For many people, soccer is a once-in-four-years event when the World Cup is played. Just like the Olympics- Do most Americans care about downhill skiing or the 100m sprint except for the Olympics? Beckham's arrival means soccer has a platform in this country all year round. He's not the best soccer player, but he's the most known because he has charisma on and off the pitch. That's why he makes so much marketing money. People around the world care what Beckham does and thinks. Why are girdiron football, basketball, and baseball so popular in this country? Because Americans care about the sport all year long, not just when the games are played. We care about possible offseason trades (like KG or Kobe possible trades). Americans are so crazy that we care about the NFL and NBA drafts where it's about teams picking college players in an auditorium! There are preseason fantasy drafts to peak our interest. Each major sport has an event that triggers the interests of Americans on the sport. Girdiron football has the NFL Championship Game of 1967 (aka The Ice Bowl) and Super Bowl 3 where Joe Namath guaranteed victory. Basketball had the Celtics in the 50's and 60's, then Magic-Bird in the 80's. Baseball had Babe Ruth. MLS hopes the event is Beckham. There are some professional athletes who actually love soccer more than the sports they actually get paid to play in. Bengals receiver Chad Johnson actually loves soccer more than girdiron football, but chose his career because he would have to travel to Europe to make money (and leave family in the USA)-- maybe his love of soccer translates into his TD celebrations = soccer players don't get penalized for celebrating a goal too much. Steve Nash was a soccer player before he went into basketball. If Beckham's successful, teenagers will feel they can continue their soccer careers instead of quitting at age 15. Ultimately, it's in the hands of MLS to get better and develop world-class players in the USA (and try to keep them here). Right now, Beckham will bring attention for a few years before that possibly happens.

Great for MLS. Great for Entertainment. Great for his wife. But it will screw his career. He's not even that interested to go. He's just being a good husband to his wife. He says that he's not really there to be famous, he's there for the kids. To show football to the Americans. He clearly still wants to play football in Europe at a professional level. It's really sad for some fans.

But he's a great player he'll take a crowd with him. MLS will be known much more for him. I think Pele has done the same thing, and didn't succeed. But Beckham is much more bigger marketting giant, so who knows what happens.

I agree. I think he'll open doors for exposure and marketing..Hopefully people will start to take notice and become interested. By this point it could go either way, for the good or for the worst, but I am just hoping for the best.

its great. beckham is one of the best in the world. america has the best in the world of everything except soccer. well heres a start... beckham has a great off the field rep, which most teams like. also, since he is somewhat of an older person, it gives the MLS more experience.

If he plays his best, then I'm all for it. But in any scenario, I think paying him what he is being paid is a huge mistake.

Sure hope he can live up to that big contract.
Sure hope his wife stays out of view. We already have enough celebrities with big egos.
