I attended two high schools. The first was Falmouth High School in Falmouth, MA, and our mascot was a clipper ship. This was because Falmouth was a whaling port and clippers were used quite frequently in those pursuits.
The second was Wando High School, in Mount Pleasant, SC, whose mascot was the Warrior, depicted as a Native-American warrior. The area had been heavily populated by Native-Americans (I forget which nation) before European colonization.
Just putting my two points in!

My high school is San Gorgonio and we are the Spartans! Our mascot is more or a cartoonish spartan, but after seeing "300" I think my school needs to hire a (really hot) guy to dress like the men from the movie. That would be cool!
