When I first saw the 1st generation Scion xB, I had a similar reaction..."Wow, what was Toyota thinking with this design?"
Fast forward a few years and I happened to sit in one for a test drive. It wasn't even on my interest list that day at the dealership to begin with. I bought one shortly after, and I still love driving it every day.
Great set of standard features (albeit side airbags would have been nice) and one of the lowest true cost to own vehicles on the road.
I'm sure that some of those opinions you've heard would change if the person actually sat in a Scion, let alone test drove one.
In the coming months the new Scion xD and 2nd generation xB will be debuting (xA and 1st gen. xB have been discontinued). Can't wait to see what they have to offer.

I JUST HAD TO ANSWER THIS QUESTION WHAT WITH MY NAME AND ALL AND I OWN A BOX ALSO! lol. Yeah I get a lot of haters on my car, but I don't care. Usually, the people who make fun, or try and pass on a "negative" vibe to others, are just not happy with themselves. I have a guy at work who makes fun of my car all the time, he takes the city bus home.....I have another co worker who just keeps saying "dude you got ripped off!!! they sold you a box!!" , his mom picks him up after work, he's 25.......yeah. SORRY LOSER!!!! I ACTUALLY HAVE A CAR!!! and i like it boxy!
I bought it because of the dealer, he wasn't a pushy @$$hole. So I just bought it right then and there. I hated the looks of it when it first came out, but it grew on me, and now I will buy Scions for life no matter how ugly they get!!! LOL. There's also a scion support group that I log onto everyday, the best place to go if you have a scion. www.scionlife.com. Check it out, it's the best. BOX CARS FOR LIFE!!!

The xB defies other cars. Admitting that the xB is cool is basically countering everything that people have made up their mind as the "ideal" car. To these people, a car should have large wheels, a low roofline, aggressive curves, high power, short windows (this, however, is coming soon to the '08 xB), and a wide stance. The first generation xB is none of this. It's obnoxious in its practicality: incredible visibility, great gas mileage, tons of space for such a small footprint, excellent value. As an xB owner, you should snicker when others sneer. The xB is part of a cool subculture that many people just can’t get. Like the guy who wore the retro t-shirts before pop-stars made it “cool”. Like the jazz band in a jam session at an underground club while everyone else is watching pop-idols lip-sync songs they never wrote… you get the idea. I suggest you embrace your car *because* they don’t get it ;)

I love the xB for not looking like every other "Dove bar" car on the road. Honestly if you aren't into cars there are only a few new cars that don't look like everything else.
The xB is in good company with Jeeps, Honda Element, Mini, New Beetle, and uhh . . . . That's all I can think of that look just like themselves, not some smoothed over copy of the other guys car.
Bottom line, you're cool and they're not.

Just don't put the dice grahpics on it!!!! Don't get hit by a P/U or SUV!!! You better get more life insuance for your family!!!! It's a mirco compac for japan, they usually drive these cars under 35 miles per hour. The car tells alot about you. You are a trendy person!! Did you own a PT cruiser when they came out? In the 70's they made fun of people that bought Minis, Honda 600, and VW Bugs. Minis are back after 30 years, Honda make bigger cars, VW has even came back with a bigger modern bug.

I love my xB. They've been around in Japan since 95, it's a shame they took so long to come to the U.S.
I've gotten a lot of remarks about mine, but usually I show them the inside and they stop talking (DVD, LCD, stereo system, fabricated creature comforts, etc).
Besides, I fill my tank up once a month. I could care less about what other people say - the money I save on gas means I can buy other stuff I don't need. :-)

I have owned three Isuzu Troopers. People had the exact same reactions to the Troopers when they came out. The more people hated them the more I loved them. (plus I have 260,000 miles on one and it runs like a sewing maching) Be glad that your car doesn't look just like everybody elses in the parking lot.
People.......I often call them "sheep-le" cause they all want to be an individual by being JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE!

I loved my box. I wrecked it though :(
I got lots of hate comments and even had it keyed. If your friends are being gay about it, tell them to shut the f*ck up and that they arent the ones driving it. You made a good choice on buying it. Its a great car/wagon/van thingy.

Because they aren't the most aestetically pleasing vehicles on the road, yet they still remain 'trendy'. That bothers a lot of people. Who cares though? Just enjoy your car.

It's very dangerous if you get in an accident. Very weak body structure. and it's hella ugly. rather get a Civic or Accord from Honda.
