Wheaties and beer, the breakfast of ex champions

As a retired athlete who has put on quite a bit of weight after my injuries prevented me from participating at the same level anymore, I can answer that for you in first hand: it's because one of the reasons I did as well at athletics in the first place is that my overaverage appetite provided me the extra calories I needed for all the activities I was in. When I stopped being so active, and my appetite didn't diminish, I started gaining weight. When I curb my appetite (which either takes a LOT of will power, or drugs) and when I increase my level of activity, I can lose weight, but, I find that to be so much more difficult now than it ever was way back then...

As athletes, they are accustomed to high levels of training and physical exertion.

When they retire, unless they specifically make an effort otherwise, their activity level (and correspondingly their metabolism) drops significantly while they continue to eat as before.

Same reason many people do, they are not burning near the same calories any more. And they may continue to eat what they used to.
