I live in Southern California on the second floor of an apartment complex. There is one wall mounted AC in the living room, but it doesn't even begin to reach my room when turned on full blast. I need to get a portable ac for my bedroom (relatively small in size) since the window configuration does not allow a traditional window mounted unit. Of all the ones I've looked into, the only fault customers have consistantly complained about is that a tray of some sort needs to be placed under the air conditioner to collect the water removed from the air, and it tends to spill all over the floor when trying to drain.

Is there a model that would allow the draining of the water through a tube connected to the window in small amounts (I don't want to rain down buckets of water on people walking down below), or maybe even an innovative new design that bypasses the need to collect and empty condensate all together?

Thanks :D

Some of the more expensive ones have evaporators in them so they don't need a condensate drain.

Most of the portable units all require a drain and a way to dispose of the condenser air.

If you do not wish to empty the condensate pan, you can purchase a heated condensate pan which will evaperate the water, or else a condensate pump. However, since the main objective of air conditioning is to remove humidity from a space, utilizing a heated condensate pan will be dumping some of the moisture back into the air. You will probably be better off with a condensate pump (Approx. $50 at Home depot and such) to capture and pump the condensate via a 3/8" vinyl tube outdoors or some other place which is suitable.

Good Luck!

If there is no hole in the bottom of the AC they will not drain. The water is supposed to stay in there to aide in cooling. The slinger ring around the fan slings the water up and helps cool the condenser.

I have used a Maytag Portable AC and it was awesome. Also had a built in dehumidifier. It cooled around 600 sq. ft and had a sleep timer and a fan. Nothing to drain and you can put it away in the winter.
