is essex a borough or a county? and is it in greater london or out of london?? im confused

It gets a bit confusing because there's London the city and there's Greater London the countty.

Essex is a county to the north east of the county of London but the built up area of London extends beyond the county boundary with some of it being in Essex.

Ilford for example is in Essex but also in the built up city of London (not to be confused with the City of London, note capital C, which is the financial heart of London).

It's a county - below Suffolk - to the North East of London. It's the last county before you start getting into the Greater London areas.

I've never been to England so I dont know. I have heard it is next to London.
