Round-robin is when you have a few teams, and they each play each other once (sometimes twice, but rarely) to decide who advances to the next round. So if there are four teams in a group, for example, each team plays three times... once against each of the other teams. The team with the most wins or points advances. This is commonly used in the elimination rounds at the Olympics. It is NOT used at all in the NHL.

Each team in a group plays against each other to determine who will advance to the next round. This is a better way to determine who the best teams are in a tournament, but takes longer to execute.

Teams usually get 2 points for a win and 1 point for a tie. The teams with the most points after a round of tournament play advance to the finals.
