I have a signed book that I got second hand. It is signed, but I'm not sure if it's an authentic signature, since I wasn't there, and I can't seem to find the author's signature online to compare it. How can I find out if the signature is authentic, and also, how can I find out how much it would be worth?

You need to take it to an appraiser. Try here:

For value you use the advanced search on www.abebooks.com and select "signed".

Three places:
1. Several different rare booksellers
2. Either Sothbey's or Christie's auction house websites.
3.The Library of Congress' website at: loc.gov and ask the Librarian this question.
Remember though, the book will be worth more if it is a first edition, first printing and has no torn pages or other peoples names written in the book. If there is writing or penciling anywhere in the book other than that done by the author the book will not be worth as much as in pristine condition. If the book has a jacket(The paper cover usually with a painting on it) and it is in good condition, no tears or folds or creases it will be worth more also. Did you know that Stephen King's first novel in the Gunfighter series is selling on ebay for up to $350 and he is still alive?

go to an antique dealer, but watch it they like to say it worth less then it really is. look in the phone book to find someone to help you. i have plenty of first additions from the 1800s. I'm keeping those baby's.

A good tip when getting something autographed take a picture of them doing it and leave it with the book or whatever you had autographed.
