she was in a house fire on 12/26/06. the grandfather died one month later. she has 3rd degree burns on her arms & back. Whereas before, she was a sweet little girl; she is now angry & moody. Sometimes she wants hugs and other times she says I HATE YOU!!. How can I give her space and yet help her too? Any advice would be deeply appreciated!

It is a little complicated because she is so young and so many things have gone on in her life. You ned to be consistent in her life. You need to show her that you love her and you are going to be there all the time even when she tries to push you away. Also help her to find an outlet for her feeling. Children often don't verbalize how they are feeling very well but they can express it in different ways. Sometimes through art or writing. You need to give her a little bit of free range to write or draw whatever she is feeling at the time or whatever comes to her mind
you may also want to get a game about feeling, they sell them online or at different stores. Kids work much better when you come to their level. A game is a safe place to exrpess those feeling of hurt and anger that she has bottled up inside. You can also share with he how you are feeling and maybe she will open up to you about how she is feeling. When she is venting at you, it probably has nothign to do with you personally. She is experienceing a loss and may be scared that she you are goign to leave her also. It also may be that you are the only one she feels safe with letting that anger out. She just needs healthy ways to express that anger. You really should try and get her some counseling. If not find soemone she connects with that may be a safe space for her. Preferably someone other than yourself. It will get better just give her some time and love her unconditionally.

She'll have to find her own outlet - especially if she doesn't want to express herself verbally to you. Maybe a diary, or something more abstract like a creative hobby or even sports. Something that is "hers" to wrap herself up in, where she can express herself without feeling vulnerable.

I imagine she has a lot of emotions with no outlet.

maybe talk to her
ask her how she feels
ask her what is deep inside of her
find out whether she is REALLY angry or if she is scared or sad
maybe counselling may be a very good thing as the problem will just esculate without proper help

I dont think any of us are qualified to really help...I might say that possibly time will help but, she should have someone professional to assist.......this is so sad, but can be righted.....good luck to her and you.....
