The automatic gearbox should not provide a problem.
You first need to check that the caravan is within the max towing weight of the car.
You do not state the year of C Class you are planning to buy.
Pre 1996 the 2.5 was not turbo-charged.
If you can find one, self-leveling suspension was an option that would improve towing handling. Look out for rust on models 1997-2000 around tops of doors (underneath door seals) wheel arches and on estate models around boot release handle.
Getting back to the gearbox pre 1996 gearboxes were hydralicly controled. After 1996 the 722.6 gearbox was used, (this gearbox is still used today in most AMG Mercedes due to its ability to handle high loads.) this gearbox is electronicaly controlled. Things to look out for are oil leaks, which are normally the sump gasket or electrical plug. Also check oil cooler pipes that go onto radiator. These run along the bottom of the radiator and sit on the engine under cover and are normally very rusty, if so get them replaced a.s.a.p!
Low oil level badly effects gearbox performance and operation. Change the oil for pre 722.6 boxes at every 36000 miles and 722.6 are supposed to be filled for life but recommend oil change at 90000.

You can tow with an automatic box no problem. Modern auto's are perfectly capable of taking this kind of load and the Mercedes is no exception. Either way, check your handbook or contact Mercedes to ensure you are not exceeding the towing limits of the car as 24ft is a pretty decent size and may exceed the safety limits of the brakes etc.

Towing with an automatic is easier and more fuel efficient. Max laden weight can be compared to your engine capacity. I took a 1,300 kg trailer up a 1 in 4 hill with my 2.5 diesel automatic recently. It didn't even blink. The hill was 3 miles, 1 in 4 all the way including some rather nasty hairpins too. Good luck.

When towing any 'caravan' or 'trailer' you need to find the gross weight of the unit being towed. Then check the manufacturers tow rating for the vehicle you want to tow it with. The type of transmission is of no concern but how much the car or truck is capable of towing is. Towing a unit that exceds the capability of the tow vehicle is dangerous and will void the manufacturers warranty as well. The vehicle manufacturers rate the towing capability of their vehicles based on the strength of the frame, the capacity of the engine/drivetrain combination and the capacity of the brakes. Exceed these capacitys and you take your life in your own hands. Whatever vehicle you settle on, the 24 foot caravan should have electric brakes and the tow vehicle should be equipped with a controller for the caravan brakes.

No. That would be too heavy for a C-Class to tow. You'd need a much bigger vehicle. To know exactly how big, you need to know the gross weight of your caravan, and then match that with the manufacturer's specs on the car or truck you'll use for towing. Most people would probably use a full ssize pickup truck to tow something that big.

Good Luck.

Yes to the automatic, no to the car. A 24 footer will require a heavier car and engine. Something like an E-500 estate would do it. With a C class, the tail will wag the dog.

You could with the older diesel autos 80s models. But newer ones, just won't handle it.
Here in the States a Pop up Camper would be your best bet,or a Hi-Lo.

Yes, you can tow.
Whether you can tow your caravan depends on whether the weight of the caravan is within the max. towing weight for that car.
