"Yo,
My bad.
Bygones."
Seriously, you haven't given the nature of your offense, but use this outline:
1. State why you are writing;
2. Admit that you did it;
3. Apologize for your action;
4. Offer no excuses, accept responsibility for consequences of your act;
5. Say that you have learned from the mistake, and
6. Say that you are hoping for forgiveness.

That's it, don't snivel or try to weasel out of it. Don't impart any responsibility to the victim like they "should" forgive you or anything like that.
Next time before you do something impulsive, think about having to write another letter.

Have you already been found guilty of this crime? If not, I would seriously consider talking to a lawyer about this first (as one other person stated above).

The newspapers have been reporting on a guy who wrote a letter of apology to a woman he raped something like 20 years ago (he was never arrested/charged/convicted of the crime when it occurred). He did this because he was going to AA and was trying to "complete" the "apologize to those you've wronged" stage.

The woman turned the letter over to the police and he was just convicted of the rape. The state this occurred in doesn't have a statute of limitations on sexual assaults.

Just something to think about before you put pen to paper.

Very carefully. You might want to seek legal advice before starting the letter. An admission of guilt, responsibility or culpability could very well bite you in your a** in spite of your good intentions in apologizing. Kind of a cute trick if you can apologize for something without any admission of having played any part in it.

First you need to be totally sincere to write this letter.
If you are really sorry the words will come to you.
You wouldn't have to ask.
Don't do it because it will make you look good.
Unless you are truly truly sorry.
You won't be able to write this letter

Straight from your heart buddy. Just say it exactly as you feel it and it will be accepted in the spirit it is given. Good for you, it will literally release a huge burden from your shoulders by apologising. It takes a very strong person to say those three simple words, I am sorry. I applaud you .......... :0)

PEACE & LIGHT
