it's called hidden aggression. Women are raised to be sugar and spice and everything nice. So, when girls feel the need to dislike someone, they do underground bullying. Instead of being upfront like men, and saying that they don't like someone, a girl will gossip, so that she can still look sweet to outsiders, but secretly gain control over the girl whose life she is ruining. And since bullying is a form of control, she has satisfied her need to look nice, but hurt someone. It hurts more than upfront bullying because women tend to be more sensitive to others. They want to trust and believe in others. So, when they are betrayed, it leaves that girl with a sense of false trust and loyalty in others probably for the rest of her life.

We grow up in a heirarchical society that implies that there is only a certain amount of power to go around. Since boys by default get most of it, girls are taught to compete with each other for what's left. Being cruel is a mode of putting someone beneath you. Girls should learn to work together and reject power game.

"s.a.l.t." is right that we grow up in a hierarchical society, but the hierarchy is not a social construct, it is human nature. Other animals will also create hierarchies that have alpha members, beta members, etc. because it is in their nature. Both males and females face hardships when competing for top places within their gender hierarchy, but it usually takes different forms. Males are usually more direct in their confrontations, and will tend to use methods like physical confrontation. Females, on the other hand, will often use more sneaky and subtle ways to establish their hierarchy, like backstabbing and other forms of psychological intimidation and manipulation.

There was a book about this subject called "Queen Bees and Wannabes" by Rosalind Wiseman. I haven't read it, but I heard it was good.

It has alot to do with insecurity, and being uncomfortable with oneself. Sometimes it can be learned through their parents, who tried to instill them with a competitive nature. I think it's getting alot worse, there needs to be a reality check dawn on them... they don't realize that their words can damage one's confident, even worse push them into further lower self-esteem...
Where is all the sensitively? It's sad that these younger girls have no consideration of other people's feelings...

I think peer pressure has alot to do with it also; trying to be cool and live up to others expectations;

there needs to be something done to stop this

They learn how from their catty mothers. I always noticed that the girls who had snooty mothers, were often snooty themselves. They hear their mothers making disparaging comments against other people, and so in an attempt to be a "big girl", they copy the behavior and use it on the playground.

Too much competition. They want to be the best so they have to terminate other competitors. Although I never been cruel because to a friend of mine because it's pointless.

If you think the girls are cruel, you should see what the boys go through...much worse that petty gossiping and hair pulling.

women individuals are crueler to at least one yet another than adult adult males are to at least one yet another because society nonetheless validates women individuals with assistance from their looks more advantageous than with assistance from their accomplishments than they do with adult adult males, so women individuals are a lot more advantageous aggressive in that section in the route of one yet another. i imagine this makes them more advantageous insecure and non-trusting and harsh with one yet another.
