I would try anything by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

Why:

They are great, easy, interesting, humorous, thought provoking, and political reads.

Mr. Vonnegut is considered on of the greatest American writers of all time.

I posted this before, but just in case you don't check the other answers:

A few years back I just googled "100 Outstanding Works of Fiction for College" and I got a ton of lists. A few of the books I remember included: Wuthering Heights, Pride and Prejudice, Atlas Shrugged, Brave New World, Farenheit 451, Animal Farm, War and Peace, Lord of the Rings, Jane Eyre, Crime and Punishment... gosh, those are just a few of the ones I remember but obviously there were a hundred on the list I printed out. Hope this helps... if you have a specific genre you would prefer you can email me I would be happy to give you other ideas if I can!
