A couple things to check: assuming your vent is open properly you should check and make sure there are no other obstructions in the chimney, sometimes birds or other animals will nest in chimneys, which brings up the second point, chimneys need to have a flue cap and screen around the top to make sure that nothing enters the chimney and blocks it and to help prevent down drafts. Those are two likely causes for improper ventilation. Another rule to consider is that a chimney needs to terminate at least 3 feet above the roof line and 2 feet above anything within 10 feet of it, again to help prevent down drafts. Just a couple of things to check.

Even though the vent is open, is the stack clear and there are no obstructions up by the chimney? Sometimes birds build nests in the chimney.

Did you build the fire towards the back of the hearth?

If the fire place used to work, I'd stick my head up the chimney and take a look and see if it's clear.

I don't know what you mean "brand name firewood" It should just be logs, make sure the fireplace is clean and that air can flow easily around the logs, you need air to burn a clean fire, clean fires make less smoke. Don't place the logs to close to the front of the fireplace or the smoke will come out the front.

cold air falls... run your gas jet a while to heat the flue, or it will smoke the house, & open a window on the windy side of the house to create positive pressure...

opened on the calm side will create a draw & pull air down chimney!

Clean out the chimney! You might have critters nesting up in there, or creosote clogging it up. It's important to check that prior to lighting your first fire of the season.

I HAVE HAD THE SAME THING HAPPEN AND SOMEONE TOLD ME TO USE SHORTER LOGS THAT ARE NOT AS WIDE AS THE FIREBOX OR DIDN'T HAVE TO LAY DIAGONAL ON YOUR FIRE. THE FIRE REALLY HAS TO BE RIGHT UNDER THE FLU NOT OUTSIDE THAT SMALL CIRCUMFRANCE. I KNOW THAT SOUNDS LIKE COMMON SENSE BUT MY WOOD WASN'T HANGING OUT OF THE FIREPLACE OR ANYTHING BUT IT WORKED....SMALLER LOGS
