In ice hockey, the coaching staff from a particular team determines who will change next for a line change, and the players as well as the coaches from the bench communicate to the players on the ice when it is time for a change. They usually say stuff like "Dump it in and change" or something like that. Line changes are made when a line is looking a little too fatigued out there, so someone from the bench calls them off and tells the replacing players to go on. That's how a line change works.

Usually the coach has the say on line changes all together...he will tap a guy or all 3 on the line on the shoulder and tell him to go...and as the game goes on usually the lines keep rolling every few mins unless the coach wants to keep a player on the bencn.

Keepin it simple here. Its usually the coach or the assistant coach. Every team has there own way of signaling one. Some tap on the player shoulders, some whistle and some just simply yell it.

assistant coaches usually make the lines...and it depends who relays the message for the next line to go on. players will come off as they are tired (usually a 30-45 second shift). they'll dump the puck in, and the next line will be on in a flash

the coach decides when, and it usually happens during a pause in the game but can happen any time.

the coach usually has his own private set of signals, like a base coach, to tell his players when and who comes in.
