IT's going to be a while, you'll have to go four years for regular college, four years of medical school, and then four to five years of internship/residency programs. So about 12-13 years.

I assume that you don't mean a general in the army who is in charge of the surge in Iraq.

You need four years of medical school after getting a BS to become a doctor. At that point, you can specialize during your residency. I've included a description from UNC's general surgery description. Their program is five years.

Are you talking about the guy who puts the warning on the cigarette packages and alcohol bottles or a doctor who actually operates on people?

get a bachelors degree in biology as your premed.
then go for the med school.
