To secure your wireless connection or network, you have 2 methods : WEP and WAP.
While WEP has been around far longer than WAP it is as secure as no password as all nowadays. So I wouldn't consider WEP anymore.
Focus on the WAP security protocol.
First login to your netgear router management console. Usually the router's IP address (or URL to type in the address bar) is 192.168.0.1 and the first time you log in there is no password.
In there you can find a security section where you will chose what type you want. Pick WAP and enter a secret phrase or password. That will also be the password or phrase to enter on your Wireless connection settings (in your control panel). Just save the settings and go to your control panel, Network connections, Wireless settings and pick WAP in the drop down menu, then enter the same passphrase and save the settings.
Just remember the password from there on. You might be asked for it whenever you try to connect wirelessly to your home network. But if you saved the settings it will prefill it on your behalf (you won't see it behind the scenes).

You can set up security in the configuration utility for your router. WEP is very easily cracked WPA 2 is the safest WiFi encryption to use.

Not at all. It's a waste of time to enable WEP.
You want at least WPA or better WPA2.
WEP is the computer equiv. to locking your door
and then keeping the key under your doormat.
