Now, keep in mind, this is my favorite, not necessarily who I think is the best driver. Case in point-- I can't stand Schumi, but he's certainly one of the best to ever get in an F-1 car. On the same par, I adore DC, but frankly, he's too nie to ever do very well in F1.
That said, (and keeping in mind I'm from the US), the all time fave is Mario Andretti. While I applaud anyone who does well in a single series or type of racing, I think the most skilled of drivers are those who can race anything and be competitive.
As for the current batch, I like Alonso-- there's no denying he's talented. He's also charismatic, and has a true devotion to the sport and doing well in it.
I'm keeping an eye on three up-and-coming drivers as well; Kubica, Kovaleinen (despite the last race), and Hamilton. All three have shown talent, and Kubica has shown a good level of consistentcy. Yeah, they're gonna screw up, and probabaly screw up pretty badly at least a few times. But, to borrow a line, good judgement comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgement.
Honorable mention: Emerson Fittipaldi, Juan Manuel Fangio, Mika Hakkinen, Bernd Rosemeyer, Sir Sterling Moss, and Sir Jackie Stewart.

Fernando Alonso. I've been a fan since 2003 and have watched him progressed. Early in his career he had a tendency to overdrive the car but as 2005 and 2006 showed Fernando upped his pace and showed that he is indeed the complete package. A lot of people say Kimi is the "Iceman" but I've seen Kimi make stupid mistakes on track by overdriving. Fernando rarely makes mistakes and is able to think and strategize during a race. He's calculating too, he knows when to push, defend, attack and back off to conserve the machinery. Very few drivers have that ability and maturity. Its sad that some people still begrudge him his success...
And I also thought he was a rather nice quiet fellow when I met him in 2004 :D Cute too hehe

All time, it is Schumacher, as he was as close to automatic as there has ever been. The best ever, yet still under appreciated. He won many races with a less than dominant car. His technical expertise was the key factor in building Ferrari into the powerhouse it is now. He had the innate ability to communicate his needs to the technical staff in order to help them improve the car. He is a killer at heart, as many competitors discovered after challenging him. He could always push his performance to anther level to discourage the competition.
His retirement has left me wandering aimlessly in search of a driver worthy of my support, and am still undecided. Bandwagoners are picking Alonso, and Kimi, which if you got behind them 3-4 years ago, congrats. If not, you are a bandwagoner. I started following Michael when he joined Benetton, and am looking for a young, less known driver to follow to the top. Maybe Rosberg, Hamilton, or Kubica.

I'd say Nico Rosberg. athough last year he got retired in most of the races he was doing quite well. i believe that if he joined a better team i wouldn't be surprised to see him between the three best drivers winning a prize. I'll just keep an eye on him

Kimi all the way, he is the next big thing for Ferrari. I have always thought of him as a great driver, but he always had the mechanical problems of Mclaren. Now that he is with Ferrari he is gonna own the competition. Hate to see Schumi go......Alonso still sucks, but that Hamilton kid is good.
