I smooshed my thumb in a car door and it gushed blood from a big gash for the rest of the day. Two days later, it still hurts to move, bend it, etc.

I'm sorry to say that unless the thumb is deformed in appearance or a bone is sticking out, an xray is the only way to find out if it is broken. A hairline or splinter fracture would only be seen via xray since they don't cause any obvious changes to the shape of the thumb and even a more severe fracture may not cause any outward signs other than swelling. Please get it xrayed so that you can find out for sure.

P.S. Yes, some people do move broken bones! I've even had people walk (limp really) into the E.R. with broken ankles. Movement, no matter how slight, does not indicate that the bone isn't broken!

you may want to be seen either by an orthopedic surgeon or at least in the ER sooner rather than later. the fact that you had a "big gash" would potentially indicated an open fracture (or a compound fracture). this would increase the chance of an infection, especially in the bone. although, infections in the hand/fingers are less common, particularyly in healthy people.
an xray is a good idea, as the mechanism, a crush injury, often results in non-displaced fractures (so you won't see any deformities grossly). hopefully you didn't sustain any tendon injury (unlikely from the mechanism).
even without a fracture, you should benefit from closing the wound (sutured) and immobilization of the finger for a few days and things come down.
good luck

If you can bend it chances are it isn't broken.

And a gash that bled for most of the day is going to take more than 2 days to heal to the point that you will have no pain.

Oh, that hurts. Well, I am going to answer your question by advising you to not listen to a firm answer from here. A simple X-ray will tell. If it involves the joint, you do want to get it checked for sure, you don't want to end up with a thumb that wont bend right for the rest of your life!

The pains probably caused from the cut. If its broken, it'd be severely painful to move, it'd be very swollen, and probably a purplish blue color.

But, if your not too sure, go for an xray and maybe a few stitches.

if it was broken you wold be in absoloute angony and you would not be able to move it maybe only very slightly its hard to answer your question when we cant see the injury but it does sound painful i would go and get it checked out by a doctor just to be safe vecause its better to be safe than sorry good luck!!!

If you can move it then it's probably not broken. But just to make sure see your doctor.
