You are correct. I think it is time for coppers should be scrapped because, as you mentioned, everything now is generally 99p or £9.99. Millions of coppers are being thrown away every year by people. I do it all the time because after all, what are you going to buy with 1p? I think they were going to get rid of notes as well and replace them with plastic cards or something to prevent notes getting scuffed and ripped through wear and tear.

Every time they remove a coin from the system the prices go up to reflect the loss..look what happened when they removed the groat..(4d coin)also the Gold Guinea (£1+!/-)& half guinea (silver coin)then it was the joey(3d) tanner(6d)when they decimalised..The half crown(2/6d) florin (2/-)
went next..they thought then and said maybe we removed too many coins so they took away the 10/- note and gave us a fifty pence coin..same size as the old 2/6d.wonderful..they decided the coins werre too easy to handle so they half sized them all..5p's always getting stuck in the corners..bah...then the £1.00 note followed suit..another coin...Don't give them anymore ideas they will be changing the £5.00 & £10.00 notes into coins next..to make us use the £20.00 & £50.00 notes..once we used to complain most vociferous if the price of anything went up by a penny .and this kept the prices in check to a degree..but now they go up by £2.00 and nobody says a thing..why not get rid of money altogether..?you say the time is for the credit/debit card.if they did it would give them yet another reason to put up prices..

Be careful what you wish for !
Don't go giving the Government the opportunity to just increase prices by the smallest coin which would presumably then be the 10p piece. Its much better to have a 1p, 2p,or 3p increase in prices rather than allowing them, by default, to increase it by the smallest possible amount of, for instance, 10p at any one time. ( How about, for instance, Petrol, increasing by 10p leaps?)
How long do you think it would then take them to abandon the, then smallest coins ( the 10p & 20p), and just have the 50p so that increases at that point are made in 50p leaps.
Instead of abandon them coppers, I would say ensure we KEEP the coppers.

I agree. I also don't appreciate the 99 cents change on an item that costs $1.01 and I don't have the penny. That's really annoying. The only good side is it tells me what a cheap outfit I've just given my business to. Most places let you slide on the penny. As for the "only $9.99" sales pitch, it's about what I expect from a sales pitch, no surprise there. I know you are referring to British currency, but it's the same for U.S. currency.

No. I save those. I wouldn't want shops to have an excuse to increase prices. It's quite amazing that you're not thinking of the saying:-
Look after the pennies and the pounds look after themselves.
Every penny counts!
