What is the reason for this? It will crank and run if I keep my foot on the gas (mostly, but I dont want to say 100% of the time) but if I put it in gear or release my foot off the gas it will go dead immediately. Also, I found out at this time that my wife had lost the gas cap, about a week earlier (this is her car). My thoughts are fuel filter, fuel pump but could it be water in the gas or even trash. Thanks for any response.

I'd have to say a vacuum hose came off the engine somewhere.

The engine is sucking air from somewhere other than thru the engines intake system.

Start by securing a new gas cap, since the the anti smog system requires a cap. If the problem persists, change the fuel filter.

Get a new cap and a new filter. It does not hurt to have one on. You might try the air filter too. People forget about them alot.

get that cap back on.it could be loosing fuel pressure.it could be the gas filter, but i doubt it would be the fuel pump,if it runs, while your foot is on the gas.
