I was watching the 92 Finals of Bulls vs Blazers on ESPN classic. What amazed me was the level of contact allowed by the league. I had forgotten that the NBA used to be a game with real men. No easy baskets, very little touch fouls, physical play. Michael Jordan went to the line every couple minutes but he actually earned it. He got hacked! Fast forward to the 2006 NBA Finals. I like Dewayne Wade, but he got over 25 free throws, and half of them were "sissy" fouls. He didn't earn a lot of his trips. So my question is, can his 45 point game in 2006 REALLY be compared to Jordan's 45 in 1992. They both worked hard, but now the NBA really limits defense. I love the NBA, but I look at it now, it just looks so "soft." I often think, could Wade, Arenas, James, and some other players do what they do against the 89 Detroit Pistons, or the 1996 Bulls? What about the 92 Knicks? Would certain players be put on the foul line 20+ times a game? It just seems so watered down now.

Yeah, the league seems to single out particular players and give them points at the line (hint: Wade). When Wade actually has to earn it, he gets "hurt" and whines. And they don't call what they should for Kobe, he gets hacked a lot with no calls, he only shoots 13 (i know, "only) a game, but he could be shooting a lot more. I saw a game last year though, Lamar Odom knocked Tony Parker to the floor because he was getting into the lane too often, and it was a hard foul, nothing excessive or dirty, and they called it a flagrant. At that point, I was like "okay, this is nuts." It was a horribly officiated game to begin with, but that was over the top. Sad part is that the NBA sort of sponsors these bad officials and rules in so many different ways. But definitely, make Wade, LeBron, Carmelo earn their stature. I hate these "you breathed on him!!!" fouls.

Too bad you can't go back and look at games from the '60's and '70s. Teams averaged MORE points and there was a lot more contact than there is now. Remember that when Jordan played, the rules about breakaways had already been changed by Kevin McHale clotheslining Kurt Rambis in the playoffs. Think of how much longer some of the high scorers could have played if they didn't allow hand checking back then - Alex English would have scored 35 a game (he was a great scorer but very slender) and Wilt, well, he would have scored even more (back then the defender could put BOTH hands on the offensive player's back if he were posted up).

Well Mike did get his share of "sissy" calls but today it is down right ridiculous how little contact the game is allowing. There will always be a set of rules for superstars, there is no way around that, but lately it seems as though everyone gets these touch foul calls especially in the midst of a run to turn the tide of the game. Defensive players can't hand check and if a defender jumps straight up and an offensive players jumps into him a throws up a prayer he gets to go to the foul line. The league is definitely trying to make sure that they keep plenty of offensive highlights on Sportcenter's top 10.

on ball contact has been limited the last few years, but away from the ball you can hold and bump cutters and whatnot more than you were ever able to in the 80's this is why teams aren't as proficient on the offensive end as they were in the 80's. In case you didn't know, since the NBA's heyday in the mid 80's scoring has gone down. a lot

No it cant be in comparison because of the fact Wade grow to be additionally taking part in against perhaps the worst protective group in the entire Playoffs that 3 hundred and sixty 5 days. And the refs did help him out throughout the Finals huge time. Wade didnt earn his factors. warmth can think of Donaghy and his refs for the period of that Finals!

Its not so much the rules that that makes it soft cause the rules has not changed any. I believe its certain new comers that dont make the games like it should be made. These games played today isnt nothing like the games when Jordan,Magic,Worthy, Bird etc... played hard core games exciting games that made you wanna go to see.

Yes, citing Wade's absolutely ridiculous trips to the charity stripe is hitting the nail on the head. For the league to even make mention of banning "flopping" is evidence that they recognize this as well.

yeah the league is as soft as wet tissue paper nowadays... i grew up here in michigan during the bad boys days, and i think that them beating on mj was the final push to his greatness. i think only kobe or wade could have played back then, and would have had the same result.
