Because by stupid people you mean average people, and average people, being average, has a perspective where they are as smart as everyone else. Therefore they conclude they are smart. It isn’t egotism really, it is just a matter or perspective. Really smart people don’t view them as smart, but average people just view really smart people as smarter than them, not themselves as stupid.
Actual conversation:
Friend 1 “How come you never date any women?”
Myself “I guess I don’t meet a lot of women who I feel are intelligent.”
Friend 1 “What are you talking about? I meet smart women all the time!”
Friend 2 “Yes, smart to you.”
Friend 1 “Whoa.”
At this point Friend 1 had a realization that smart is relative to the beholder, and understood what I meant. He was stunned by this thought.

Maybe they are smart compared to someone else or maybe they are I know I am stupid at math and science but anything else out there I'm pretty smart in.... And everyone thinks there a good driver!

denial, and b/c, well, they're stupid...it makes tem feel better...damn, i dunno...oo, and don't get me started on bad drivers..ugh!! they should all die...driving in the greakin fast lane on the freeway goin 50 mph...gets on my freakin nerver...oh, and btw, i DO NOT have road rage, i just simply pass them and leave them eating my exhaust...lol or the people that don't use blinkers when they switch lanes, or those who spped up when u are about to pass them??!! damn, there are some really crappy drivers in the U.S.!! lol well, i feel better now!!
