There is an excellent university in Arlington; I think I would pick Arlington over Dallas, unless you wanted to go to the university in University Park.

I've lived in Dallas all my life. It is a very large city. However, you really don't want to have to commute in the traffic, which can be horrible. Especially with all of the construction going on the major highways.
If you're going to the University of Texas, Arlington, definately live in Arlington. If you're going to the University of Dallas, Irving is best. If you're going to Southern Methodist, Dallas (North Dallas) is best (the school is in Highland Park with high rent). If you're going to the University of Texas at Dallas, you will want to live in Richardson, Plano, Far North Dallas.
You can always drive to Dallas to go out on the weeknds, not to mention there's plenty to do in either of those cities, they are just suburbs of Dallas.

I would definitely say Dallas. Dallas is a metropolitan city that offers a lot of things to do. Arlington and Irving are both boring suburban towns made up of shopping centers and chain restaurants. It all depends what you are looking for.

Don't choose the university you are going to based on where you think would be a better place to live. First look and see about the college and their programs. Any are nice. Although, if I had to choose I would pick Ft. Worth (which I know isn't on the list) it is by Dallas but has a western flair and a small town atmosphere!
