I don't think there is a 1 year old in the world that would understand really what is going on. You should celebrate the birthday - it is a day of life and celebration, no matter what!

Ask your mother why you cannot celebrate his birthday because you are happy that he is going to be a year old. It does not have to be a big party, but the family can have cake and ice cream and mark the occasion with gladness.
Most one-year-olds have no idea what the party is all about. Your brother is not really that much different than other children his age. Even if he does not understand, you do. You should celebrate. If you want an age-appropriate theme, how about "teddy bears" or clowns? Maybe you could make a centerpiece and party favors.
Bless you for being a good sibling with a big heart.

I think you should celebrate your brother's birthday. I'm not so sure that any one year old really understands what's going on. As far as a theme goes, maybe just something he likes to do. Have a finger paint party - or a party around one of his favorite things (cars, teddy bears etc.)
And cake! Take the "First Birthday Cake All Over My Face" picture for him to see when he gets older.
I hope you decide to celebrate. If you do, have fun - I know he'll have a great time. : )

I don't know that any other 1 year old knows what's going on when he/she has a birthday. It should be celebrated. Don't treat him any differently than you would any other child. I have a Downs Syndrome cousin and all of his birthdays were celebrated. Think about in the future if he is looking at old pictures and sees them for everyone else's 1st birthday, but not his, how do you think he will feel? Just have a cake and some balloons. He'll be thrilled with both.

You should celebrate his birthday. If he is truly a down syndrome child, he will laugh and enjoy it like any other 1 year old. You do know that the National Down Syndrome Association has a support group near you and that you can teach your brother sign language to understand almost everything going on.You need to have your family go to the support group so all of you will benefit from the knowledge.

I think he could understand a happy time with his family. Even if he wont remember the party, you can take pictures. Not being able to remember anything is normal for any baby that age. When hes older he can look back on the pictures and you can tell him the story of his first birthday. You could just have a cake and time with the family.

He would understand that his family is having a special time, and perhaps even that its especially for him.
A party would be a lot of fun for him and a chance for you and your family to celebrate his entering your family. Parties aren't just for the guest of honor, but family and friends too.
A nice get together that would be fun, not overwhelming with too many people or activity for your brother would be a nice thing for the whole family. And you might have slices of cake for everyone else and make a special treat that he can eat (try to make them look similar though!)
Of course you should celebrate his birthday!

Give the child a birthday party. Just get some balloons and a cake. It doesn't have to be a huge party, just a little celebration to mark the day.

A child with Downy's Syndrome should not be excluded from normal family celebrations. Where will it end, no Christmas, Easter or family outings? Nothing can isolate a child more than exclusion, the child should be to feel that he is loved regardless of being "different".

Yeah celebrate it, why not?
No 1-year old baby will understand what's happening around him, so doesn't matter the theme, the thing is to make him feel good and have fun ^^
