I have a 70 gallon tank with African cichlids. I have 5 adult brichardi and 6 adult marlieri plus several young fish from both kinds. I have had them a little over a year and they have always been ok even when I forget to change any water. Today when I got home from class I saw that several of the fish are very slimey. It’s really thick and kinda white looking and all over them. They have never been sick before and I don’t know what it is or what to do. My favorite store is closed on Monday and the only other thing close is Petsmart and friends have said they don’t know much about fish. I did a water change Saturday and they looked fine but I didn’t look at them this morning because I was late for class. I don’t have a test kit to test anything and the store tests for me and always says everything is ok. The tank has crushed coral for gravel and loads of rocks and driftwood for the fish to hide in. Can anybody help me figure out what this is?

It sounds like Slime Disease. This is caused by a parasite (a protozoa to be exact). It is highly contagious and if left untreated will cause death.

Raise temperature and treat with appropriate parasite medication such as Interpet's Anti Slime (your pet store will be able to recommend something). Remember to remove any carbon from your filter while treating.

It's really hard to say without seeing them, but it sounds like some sort of fungus problem. If this is the case then the obvious answer is a fungus medication like Pimafix.

its either fungus or chlorine has gotten in them. Make sure you add chemicals to tanks, after water changes too, because if you dont get rid of the chlorine in the tap water, they will die.
