I'm a newbie in recording. Just went through "Guerilla's guide to home recording". It highly recommends using compression whenever possible. I'm currently looking to buy Boss CS-3 compressor/sustainer for the guitar, but was thinking if it makes any sense to route vocals though this too. If not, what is the unit I should be looking for (for vocals only, I mean). Thanks!

Compression is a curse, and tends to be overused, resulting in recordings that, increasingly, lack all dynamics and harmonics and thus have all the audio fidelity of a cheap 1960s vintage transistor radio.

What's next, listening to music through a couple of tin cans and a piece of string?

Hello - the web is a great place to learn a lot about recording. Check www.gearslutz.com and pro sound web. I own a commercial recording studio and I can tell you it is not always necessary to use compression. It can often ruin the sound of what you are recording/mixing by removing all the dynamics. I would not pass vocals through the boss compressor - unless you like that effect - it will definitely change the way your recording sounds. But - it is one of my all time favorites for guitar - so good purchase. There are lots of free or low cost software compressors you can try first - these will be much better to try than the pedal. For Mac try massyplugins - his software compressor is amazing. Otherwise search the computer forum at gearslutz for tons of additional info.
