Get a proper ferret cage, not a bird cage. They sell em in the petshop. A wire cage floor is not only painful, but may result in broken legs, feet or toes, or torn nails.
Don't put em in fishtanks, the air doesn't circulate enough and they need more space to spaz out (they are very energetic and playful). On that note, make sure you take him/her out to play DAILY. It's easy, cuz they are so entertaining.
The wire bottom will also be hard to clean if you put anything on it.
Don't use kitty litter, the clay kind messes with their respiratory system because of the dust, and the clumping kind sticks to their backsides and can clog their orifices because the ferret is so low to the ground.
Also, while woodchips may seem appropriate, they too can cause problems. Cedar dust is bad for ferret lungs and the spinters can be irritating. Make sure you get fine pine shavings, no cedar.
All THAT said...
For litter, use a product like Feline Pine. It keeps the stink down, doesn't hurt the ferret and it available in most pet stores.
For bedding, you can get a cellulose "fluff". I forget what it's called, but it's pretty much like clumped paper pulp. It's absorbant, cheap and safe. There is also bedding made from Corn Cob, that's good too.

If you're not going to buy an actual ferret cage you have a couple of options.. One, you can probably remove that wire floor (its really for birds so they don't walk around in their doody and feathers). You can use either wood chips, hay, shredded newspaper, shredded cotton/paper (comes colored), paper towels/toilet paper.. its up to you. But the important thing to remember is, you'll need something disposable because your little pal will use it for a bathroom. Now, since ferrets are similar to cats, you may need to scoop his doody out of his cage everyday to keep it cleaner and odor free. If you can't remove that wire floor, you can place paper towels down over it, and then put shredded stuff over it so your pal has a bathroom. Is there an actual bed for him? they love soft things they can hide in, they have some that are even similar to hammocks. You don't want your ferret to sleep where it uses the bathroom. I hope this helps! Good luck!

I have had several ferrets, unless you really hate your pet, or that cage is at the VERY least two by three by three. You will get off the computer and have your parents take you to a pet store now and purchase a proper cage. They NEED ROOM. Anyway, I used a litter made from compressed saw dust. It reduced odor, was dust free, made cleaning a snap, and they loved to burrow in it.

You could get "reptile carpet". It's technically made for reptile cages, but it's a cage liner that can be washed and will probably help with your ferret's footing and stuff if she's got a bad leg.

I think a cardboard would be natural and soft for her. You can cut its edges in order to adjust it to the shape of the cage. And you can also put some sawdust bedding above it, those you can find in the pet shops that are for hamsters. Or maybe special sand is a good choise too!

We have a ton of old tee shirts and old sweatshirts at the bottom of our ferrets cage.... they love to burrow up in them and play and sleep.... plus its soft on their feet. They usually don't soil them, becuase they are litter trained (yesterdays news for ferrets - not clay litter).
