i just had an email experience through yahoo answers. it was my fault b/c one of the answerers of a quesion i posted said that she was a model. so of course im wondering why a model is on yahoo answers, hell with that why is a supermodel emailing me back. the girl went on to say that she was caroline trentini, who is a brazilian supermodel. facts in our email conversation showed that this girl had to be making this up. what'd you all think of that? are people just looking to act like someone else over the net. what's wrong with telling someone who you really are?

I suppose some people get off on acting like someone else. You know, a fantasy kind of thing. Some people think it's fun to trick other people -- play mind games. My personal feeling is that they are very, very bored and not "mentally capable" -for whatever reason- of finding anything interesting to do in their real life, and don't find satisfaction in answering serious questions with an actual answer. For me, it passes time, lol. But I've seen a lot of the "pretend I'm somebody else" people... they get quite a kick out of it... go figure. They are the only ones who think it's cute.
Take care.

that question doesn't just apply to Yahoo. People seem to enjoy the tittilation it brings to pretend you are someone else. Normally it is just clean honest fun. The girl you're describing probably was just fantasizing and wondering if she could make you believe it. There are very few places where anyone has the opportunity to do that.

Unfortunately, some people with self esteem issues - can't imagine you'd ever be interested in them. So, they choose someone who would never be turned down - the super model.
Other people are just the opposite they enjoy being able to talk freely and openly about themselves but again they know that there will be no ramifications for what they reveal.

I think most of us fall in the middle. We exaggerate some of our strengths and down play our weaknesses. Haven't you at one time or another told a white lie about yourself? When we're anonymous (like on Yahoo) we can be who ever we would like to be. No strings attached. For some that's just plain fun for others it's just not acceptable.

Because on the internet you can be who ever you want to be. You can live out your fantasies - sometimes people go to far but we can all be incognito here. We all get the opportunity to be someone or something that we will never in our lives have the chance to be. Just think of it as a masquerade party; we all wear masks to hide who we really are, to make ourselves better, to make us feel good about who we are. And yes, we all know that it is a false sense of acceptance but it is still, in some small way, an ego boost.
I personally don't pretend to be someone else but I do understand why one would. Don't get to upset with these people - by playing along with their charade, you are in a way giving them a little sense of confidence. Maybe they're not an attractive person so they use a different picture just hear someone tell them that they are pretty, maybe they've had a rough life and have made a lot of mistakes so they get on the internet and pretend that they are a well established lawyer just to finally hear that someone is proud of their accomplishments.
If you're not planning on meeting these masked people in person, what does it really matter? Let them have their fun.

I guess that's one of the advantages of being on line. You can be anyone you chose to be,unless there's a web cam set up in the room.Maybe the person you contacted had aspirations of being a Brazilian supermodel or she was just playing games with you.It must take a lot of energy to keep up the facade.I would probably go schizophrenic trying to figure out what lies I told which person,so why bother?

Some people have a really low self-esteem, don't like themselves, and wish they were someone else. The Internet gives them enough anonymity that they can pretend to be someone else. I think it just makes them feel better to be able to live the fantasy even if in just a limited scope.

I totally agree with you! If everyone would just be thierselves then maybe trust could be built with each other. Why should we be ashamed of who we really are?
