can i use my 1 GB apple ipod as a memory device (flash drive)

You can
go to itunes and you can select the eneble disk mode and than when you try to apply it it will say that this means that you have to manually eject the ipod nano. Just clikc on the triangle over square icon next to the name of your ipod in itunes
I am talking about the newest itunes you can download it from the apple website

yes you can... when you connect it to your computer it will come up as a generic external drive...
