We call it "The War of Independence" because that is what it was.

I've always been mystified as to why its known as a revolution in America - in no way does it bear any relation to the most famous revolutions in France and Russia.

A revolution to me is an uprising against the ruling powers, when those ruling powers are within the country (France and Russia rebelled against their monarchies). This is not what happened in America.

Looking around on UK websites I see that the term American Revolution is actually used more than any reference to Independence. It might be noted that when US history is taught at British universities it is usually taught from the same basic introductory texts as in the US. Also, the British also refer to what happened as the end of the First British Empire.

I once heard a British historian refer to the American Revolution as the American cessation. I have also heard them use the term the "American War of Inedpendence", which I believe is the more common reference w/in the U.K.
