Make sure you practice your scales-make it almost a ritual that you warm up by doing scales!

This may sound a bit naff but get at least one lesson. That way you can get a professional opinion of how well you are doing. Guitar tutors now accept that people play different styles and won't have a go just 'cos your not playing classical acoustic.

there is a little exercise called the "caterpillar" it's really simple - get your hand into the claw position starting with your index finger on the 5th fret space, middle finger on 6th fret space, etc playing thickest to thinnest string. then just play every string after one another, but don't move your fingers until you've played the string.
it's a bit difficult to explain as you can see but it's worth a go.

Buy guitar mags with tab in, there are usually acoustic sections and some special editions with lotsa great acoustic songs, enjoy playing so it never seems a chore.
