NO! There are too many ways to go into debt. Big name publishers have the money and expertise to get the job done right. If they don't take the book, ask why, then change it a bit, until it hits their standards.

No, I would not.
I would recommend polishing the manuscript until it is perfect and then submitting it to agents and publishers who handle the type of story you have written. I'd recommend purchasing a current copy of Writer's Market and going from there. I'd recommend preparing yourself for tons of rejections. I'd recommend you continue to write if it's your passion and while the manuscript of your first novel is making rounds, I'd suggest you start writing your next novel. Don't wait by the mail box. Keep your rejection letters in a file and don't let them beat you down.

I'd only recommend self-publishing if you are compiling something to share with a small group - such as a family history you want to print up for all your relatives. Self-publishing won't earn you any money or writing credentials.

Good luck.

In a word - NO - and if you surf the answers at Resolved Questions you will see why. Also join Absolute Write Water Cooler and read the gazillions of horror stories in their Bewares and Background Checks section. You will be surprised to see how many scams there are and how many people have had terrible experiences with self publishing. C.

Go on the web and check out Matthew Reilly's bio. Then see what you think about self-publishing a first novel.

I published my own book "Happy Birthday Mr Sidney" through authorhouse.com and my book is on amazon & barnesandnoble.com

Make sure you edit your book, AND don't edit yourself. Have someone else do it for you. My novel is fiction based on fact. It's getting great reviews but self published means you do all the work. Writers market will help, but be prepared to be rejected depending on your book. Make sure its edited and do a synopsis to give out.

Only if you have an effective method of distribution and promotion. There is not much point in being published if nobody sees your work. That is part of the publishers job.
