Feed the a normal amount before you leave and they will be fine. You will probably come home to a very clean tank as they will scavenge for every morsel of food available but will definitely not starve. Fish in the wild definitely don't have someone feeding them every day.
If you feel that they have to be fed, find someone you trust and get them to do it but don't leave the amount to feed up to them. Put small cups/containers on top of the tank with the proper amount already in each one so all they have to do is pour the contents of the cup in. That way you don't come back to a filthy tank with terribly over-fed fish.

I sometimes fed my Orandas three times each day. They can survive if you only feed them every other day, but they are going to be really hungry when you come back from vacation. You could drop one of those automatic feeders into the water, but they cause the water to become cloudy. Some pet stores do sell feeders that automatically drop food into the water. They are expensive. That's the only problem with them.

i would recommend that you go out and buy week-end feeder blocks for your goldfish. Week-end feeder blocks are these blocks that sink to the bottom of the tank and the fish swim down to feed off of them. The block won't discolor your tank. This way you want have to worry about your friend feeding them the right time or amount. If you decide to use the blocks I would start to feed them a few days advanced so they will get use to the taste. If you don't to do that, leave a schedule of what time to feed the fish.

Don't use the holiday type feeders. They contain calcium carbonate and different materials that are designed to dissolve in the water to release food. Unfortunately all they really do is throw the water chemistry off.
If you are really concerned you can purchase a timed feeder that mounts on the tank and disperses a set amount of food at a specific time.
4 days isn't too long to leave your fish without food if they are healthy to begin with. Your friend should only feed them the amounts and times that you feed them. Invite them over to the house prior to leaving so that you can show them exactly how much you feed so they don't get overfed.

You can actually not feed your goldfish and plecostomus for up to five days, but if your friend is feeding them, then you will only have to feed them every other day, and only with flake food. I used to give my fish two or three weekend feeder tablets for a 5 to 7 day vacation.

First of all you should only feed your fish once every two days so your friend could come over just once in the middle of your trip.

Just feed them the same amount you feed them. Fish are tough and a day's worth of food that is missed probably wont kill them. You can buy holiday feeders that you put in the tank and the fish will eat and will absorb it through the water and their gills.

They do have automatic fish feeders. Go to your local pet store and ask about them.
