Look in to Yahoo DSL, starting at $15.00 a month, you can't really beat it. Granted the modem is $50.00 in the beginning, but I got a $50.00 rebate on it also. Do you have AOL? If so doesn't it cost about $25.00 a month? If that's true the modem would pay for itself in 5 months even if you didn't get a rebate. I down-graded from cable because it was costing $50.00 a month, to expensive. I got the $20.00 option just for good measure, I was not disappointed.

AT&T has some deal going (at least with BellSouth in the SE United States, but maybe for your region too) where you can bundle your wireless phone, DSL, and satellite TV service into a single monthly charge from them of like $99.

Failing that, you might check to see whether some ISPs have "lite" DSL plans, which offer less speed but don't cost as much, maybe $10-30 a month instead of $40-60.

I have DSL
It costs me $31.99/month
It does not use the phone line - it has it's own special line.

To do this on a dialup you need to get a second phone line which will cost at minimum $20/month
plus the cost for your dialup access - $10-$20/month

If you already have a second line for internet - that you are willing to lose, DSL may be cheaper.

Otherwise, it'll at least free up the phone line. In an emergency - the modem has to be disconnected for you to call 911. Now, your phone will be free for use.

Not to mention added benefits of high-speed.
Every try to do research for a school report and igve up loading some sites because they take to long - well with DSL you won't do that - the site will load and you'll be able to get access to more information quicker and easier.

(hope this helps)

I got DSL several months back. Both the cable and the phone company was offering it for less than I was paying for AOL Dialup Service back then. DSL is so much better--mine is through the cable company, and is $25 per month.

these day if you look around you can get broad band (DSL) cheaper than the dial up monthly fee
if you're on pay as you go dial up it can become very expensive you only need to use the net about 3 hours a week to be paying a fortune
It's certainly cheaper to go broad band and nicer because of the speed you're also on the net less time to download something
and it doesn't tie up the phone line
