didn't they just come from warm liquid in our bellies? i saw a home birth where they put the infant in a basin of warm water, the newborn laid there peacefully and seemed so content. i would think hospitals should accomodate this if parents want to do this!?

You know what i totally 100% agree with you. Home births, unfortunately are waaayyy more accommodating and about the family and their wishes. Water births at home are popular as well. They say its less traumatizing to the newborn, going from water to water. That's what i plan on doing.
But anyway, hospitals have certain protocols when it comes to labor and delivery. Alot of medical intervention when it may not be necessary and really the parents dont have much of a say. Talk to your hospital. Ask what they do to accommodate the wishes of the parents.

Some hospitals may actually accomadate this. I mean women can have an at home birth, and may have this option. There is also the option of giving birth in a tub full of water. I know once they cut the ambilical cord, you are not supposed to soak their bellies in water. But before that, there should be no problem.

I'm not sure of all the reasons, but I do know you aren't supposed to immerse their belly in water until their umbilical cord has dried up and fallen off to prevent infection. Good enough reason for me. Skin-to-skin contact with mom is better for warmth and bonding, from what I've heard...and experienced.

I think that the big reason why hospitals don't do that is because they are busy evaluating the baby to make sure that everything is ok. And, believe it or not, crying is GOOD for the baby, as it insures that he or she is getting a good supply of oxygen!

i think i saw that one too and it makes sense, i mean they've been in a sack full of water for 9 months, it's all they know.

each baby is different and there's always a possibility of the baby getting burned
