Actually the recruiting is not done by groups. Despite the common belief that groups go around choosing people, the fact is that there is an elaborate process that individuals go through within their own psyche as well as their own social networks that sets the stage for their joining a terrorist organization. From there they are the ones who reach out and ask to join. This is not done all the time, and most groups never find anyone who actually belongs to an active group who would take them. After all, these people are fully familiar with infiltration tactics and don't let people off the street into their units. For a good read on this pick up these books below.

And oh yeah, no brainwashing takes place and no, they are not normally poor and uneducated. The number of people involved in jihad are normally in the professional technical sector (in the middle class) with families and homes and friends.

just like when I was in Vietnam they have many ways of recruiting. The most effective recruitment strategy is to have American troops invade a country that had nothing to do with the war we are involved in (eg. Vietnam and the Cold War or now Iraq and the War against Global Terrorism) and have massive collateral deaths. This will motivate the terrorists more than any other strategy. The second most effective strategy in recruiting terrorists is to linger on in a civil war and take sides. But the most devastating strategy is to start training an army that is willing to murder its own citizens, terrorists join this army ( just like the Cong did in Nam) and we give them the training and weapons so they can abandon their army and join the insurgents or they can stay embedded with the troops and pass our strategy on to the terrorists so they become more and more effective terrorists.

Do terrorists recruit within the U.S.? I don't know. Anything is possible, but I'm sure that anyone that is that extreme in their views of the U.S. would keep a low profile, or at least keep those views within a circle of trusted associates.

Now, the 'how' is a bit easier to explain. They identify people who fit certain profiles, people who express hopelessness, bitterness, and/or disenchantment. They give those people the answer that they want to hear, offer them friendship and comradery among like-minded individuals, and then things go from there. Once the recruit's willingness to become involved is raised, they are given a mission and trained to carry it out--whether it's as a suicide bomber, an assassin, or some other purpose.

Oh, and don't worry about your grammar. It might not be perfect, but it's understandable... which is better than some other people who post on these Answer! boards.

Dang straight
you're not going to run into any OSAMA WANTS YOU posters
but, the recuiters are busy none the less !! Their best work seems to be in the schools of certain muslim clerics in any number of countries around the world--- the pickings are ripe in these places for many of the students in these schools have been being prepared for their entire life to turn their thoughts and actions over to the radical mullahs in charge ---- a lot of them coming from homes and situations that seem to have no future anyway -- and just enough of a grip on the years of "down with American" brainwashing to be fertile ground for the guys who present them with the opportunity to be a real live "soldier" in "the cause" !!!!

Terrorists do recruit. For evidence of this, visit John Walker Lindh, a Californian, in his jail cell in Virginia (or wherever he is), now serving 20 years for terrorism charges. Lindh was captured in Afghanistan fighting against our troops.

And there have been others.

Sometimes they recruit through the local mosques here in the U.S.

Terrorists recruit from from within the established groups with similar "religious beliefs". Eco-terrorists from nature worshipers, Islamic terrorists from Muslims, abortion shop bombers from Christians, etc. They look for the radicals within the groups and then prey on their beliefs, often twisting them using established psychological techniques (e.g. "brain washing").
