I think you're generalizing incorrectly - it seems to me that youths (especially teenagers) will recognize other friends and classmates and acknowledge them.

Why do Asians yell to each other across the street in Chinatown? In both cases, it's because they feel like it is my guess. Anything else I can help with?

Why does ANYONE (irregardless of color) yell across the way to each other in the mall?
To get the other person's attention!
Tacky? Yes

I don't think it's just african americans, when I see someone I know and they are not close by I yell too, otherwise they might walk away, and you won't be able to talk to them.

I don't know but it's very annoying. I'd also like to know why some of them talk so much in movie theaters when others are trying to watch a movie & why a lot of them look straight at you but are talking to the person behind you....what's up with that? Not trying to generalize here but its true a lot of the times....

the same reason any other race does it. it's just that when blacks do it, we sound ignorant because some of us have to speak incorrect English while we yell.

I have observed this practice across many ethnic groups and cultures -- but your observation is a tight and cogent one.
