Not necessarily. I went almost 3 weeks over and NEVER dilated. I'm not really sure how to know if you've dilated other than by exam but when you start wiping slime and/or see a pinkish wad, you are definately in early stages of labor in the least. I started that and was deemed "in labor" and it lasted 26 hours before giving birth. Don't let me scare you, of those 26 hours, I wasn't hurting or convienced that I was in labor until the last 2. I was a believer then!! I have a korean doctor who adimately says "Baby will come, when baby is ready". Don't worry too much about your due date, it's just a standard to go by. My first 2 were over 2 weeks after the due date. It's not bad. I've had 2 c-sections and a natural delivery and I'd do it again tomorrow if I could!! Enjoy, it's all worth it!! Good luck and Congratulations!!! Couldn't ask more for spring than a new baby!!

I had my daughter 3 days after the due date and was actually sent home the day before I had her because I had not dialated. I could not tell the difference.

You won't know. Your doctor should tell you at your next apt. If they don't say anything after your exam, ask. Also ask about induction and when they think they would induce. Some women don't dilate at all until labor begins, some walk around for weeks dilating and never even know they are. You can't tell. Only your doctor or nurses at the hospital can tell. Good luck!! I hope things get moving for you!!

I never knew...I walked around at a 2 for a few weeks. Once active labor kicked it things went fast. I don't think you are able to check yourself and know what your looking for. Just go out a walk your little heart out...vacuum, do some house work and have sex...well as long as you doctor said it was OK. Good luck to you.

Have you had any contractions?? Or nothing at all??? What did your doctor say at your last visit?

You would get checked by your doctor or nurse and they can tell you if you have dialated. Good luck! Seems like your lil man will be here soon!

I'm 37 weeks and waiting....
My aunt is a NICU nurse and told me that when I feel pressure down low, esp. in back, it's a sign of dialating.

Are you having a discharge that is similar (for lack of a better way to describe) to vaginal snot? If so, grab a little between thumb and forefinger. Slowly separate fingers and if there is a long strand that is unbroken of the mucous secretion, chances are you will go soon. (This is called sticky spin)

I walked around for days a few+ centimeters dilated and had no clue. I've heard of others much further than that. Your doc can tell.
