I'm breastfeeding my 3 month old daughter and my milk supply is low. I know we're just getting more in tune with each other - it's not that. It's getting low. What are some SAFE herbs to take and still breastfeed her to boost my milk supply? Also - any other techinques to boost my milk supply?
Please when suggesting herbs - have a website in mind so I can go read more about the herb! I appreciate it!

FENUGREEKis a great herb to boost milk supply (i have no website though). I take it now and it works great. It wont make you overproduce but keeps to regular. It can cause a bit of gas, so start slow. It will make your sweat smell like maple syrup - that way you know its working. My gyn recommended this to me for both kids. I swear by it.
There is one other herbal concoction I saw at Whole Foods, but i cant remember the name.

Drink a bottle of water at each feeding. It wont make more milk, but it will ensure that you keep your supply up. Nursing takes alot of fluid out of you and you need to replenish. If you excercize as well, drink two bottle after your workout.

Pump in between feedings. This is really hard to do if you work or are busy with other kids. I try to stay up after the last feeding and pump one more time before bed. That way I am building up a stash and increasing the demand for milk (or so my body thinks) the more that is demanded, the more you will make.

Check with your doctor before you take any herbs or supplements.

The only tried-and-true method I've ever heard of is to pump between feedings. Your body naturally produces enough milk to feed your baby, based on supply and demand. So if you increase the demand by pumping, your body will increase the supply.

Make sure you drink plenty of fluids all day long. Even more than the recommended 8 glasses of water a day.

Good luck!

For my first child, I noticed that my milk supply seemed to be getting low. When I called the lactation consultant for advice, she said to pump between feedings, and pump after the baby was through nursing in order to get my body to produce more milk. She also suggested drinking lots of water, taking fenugreek and this tea made by Traditional Medicinals. The tea was called "Organic Mother's Milk--Promotes Healthy Lactation."

There is a great website that I use for breastfeeding advice. it's called kellymom.org

hope this helps!

you don't need herbs why waste your money just put her on the breast more often it'll help and sit around for 5 or 10 min after she falls alseep and let her keep sucking it'll help your body think it needs more milk to keep her happy if she gets off just put her right back on she won't actually be getting milk and it won't disturb her sleep so you might as well take advantage and if she can't get anymore milk just leave her there she probably doesn't mind sucking a few extra min and her sucking while your empty will help tremendously supply and demand its almost fool proof usually it takes care of it self though

Don't take herbs. you can increase you milk supply by nursing more often and pumping between feedings. I found these links very helpful when I didn't think I was making enough milk.

None with out your doctors permission. Herbs are great but are not approved by the FDA; therefore they are not recommended or checked for safety with breastfeeding. Why take that chance.
