Sounds like your graphic card is dead, has died. Check that it shows in your hardware list, try to restore it.

You didn't say which operating system you use - or whether it's configured for Automatic Windows Updates.

I had a similar problem - I have an Nvidia graphics card, and when Windows XP update installed a hardware update for this card.......I had exactly the same problem as you describe.

I had to reinstall the original drivers for my card (from the installation disc that came with it.) If you don't have this option, go into Device Manager, click on Display Adaptors, right-click on your adapter, choose Prop[erties, and Roll Back Driver. You may have to reboot, but this should solve your problem (if the card's not faulty.)

this is a common problem, when changing the resolution make sure you click apply and then ok,i used to make this mistake and just ckick ok
if you have a ati or nvidia graphic card then right click anywhere on the desktop and then click the nvidia or ati shortcut ,this will take you to the appropriate graphic card control panel, you can then use the control panel to adjust the resolution there, this can be sometimes more effective than doing it in display properties
also you may not have your graphic drivers installed, this would limit your desktop to lower resolutions, here are links to the 3 most popular graphic drivers
nvidia...http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp
a.t.i....http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html
intel extreme graphics...http://downloadcenter.intel.com/scripts-df-external/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=N&ProductID=&DwnldID=9033&strOSs=OSFullName=&lang=eng
recommended resolution for optimal usage is either 800x600/1024x768
good luck

in changing the resolution you have to agree to keep the resolution that u set it to before it will keep it will ask u if you want to keep it just click yes and it should keep that setting

there also maybe a program that has to run in that certain resolution keeping from saving the change

If you are using a grapics card, then you may need to reinstall the drivers for that...and if it's onboard graphics, again you may need to reinstall the drivers.
